* Only supplies the 208 to 240 VAC 30 amps AC for 208-240 VAC chargers Tested: Small paddle TAL2000 (with RAV4 EV) = works Tested: Inductive magnecharger gen1 charger (LPI) = works Tested: PFC-20 manzanitamicro.com = works Tested: PFC-50 set to only draw 30 amps (or less) AC manzanitamicro.com = works Off the shelf non-power factor corrected chargers: Not recommended, and
likely will not work. Reason: The AVCON charging head units installed at almost all public EV charger locations are an evi ics-200. The evi ICS-200 circuitry looks for current spikes coming from non-power factor corrected chargers When the ics-200 senses them, it gives a front panel 'over current' error and turns off the power to the handle (no power to the charger = no charge current). The ICS-200 circuitry was designed to only operate with power factor corrected chargers. Thus off the shelf 220 VAC conversion chargers with poor power factor correction will not work with the evi ics-200 AVCON charging head (the ics-200 will trip after one minute, shut off power and give a front panel error). Some EAA members have turned down their 220 VAC chargers and have been able to 'make it work'. But their output current is so low, it may not be worth the effort or cost. If you are using an off the shelf power factor corrected 220 VAC charger mentioned above, it is worth the effort and cost to be able to use all the free public AVCON power. This is the same AVCON to 14-50 adapter box used on the EV drive to Sacramento (using the EV charging infrastructure) for CARB workshop #1. It has been used it to adapt the AVCON connector to charge EV1s using their club chargers. AVCON receptacle is installed into a solid sheet metal box with the 14-50 outlet mounted on the side. The box has four small rubber feet on the bottom and a handle for easy carrying. The EAA (Electric Auto Association) is a nonprofit organization. The
EAA sells their merchandise items at cost. (Some assembly required) |
